Wonder Woman 2: Robin Wright Returning As Antiope

https://ift.tt/2qha0sm

Wonder Woman 1984 will feature the return of General Antiope, Robin Wright confirms. With the core team of people involved returning for the sequel like director Patty Jenkins, Gal Gadot and Chris Pine, many are looking forward to the film, especially with how well-received 2017's Wonder Woman was. Set in the 1980s - which Screen Rant exclusively broke last year - at the height of the Cold War between the Soviet Union and the U.S., the movie will introduce the Amazonian goddess to a brand new threat, Kristen Wiig's Barbara Ann Minerva aka Cheetah.

Back in September, a rumor surfaced claiming that Wright could be back for Wonder Woman 1984 - via flashback scenes since the Amazonian warrior died heroically in the first film. No details were given with regard to what the sequence would be but it's said to be featuring Antiope and Hippolyta. Two months later, the actress confirms the news herself and she couldn't be more thrilled to be a part of the successful DC subseries.

Talking with Variety as she does the promo rounds for the final season of House of Cards, Wright acknowledges that she'll reprise the role as General Antiope in Wonder Woman 1984. The acclaimed actress didn't share any narrative details about her part in the sequel or the film as a whole, but as a major proponent of advancing women rights in the industry, she talked about what a feminist icon like Wonder Woman in the modern times:

"It's going to be an iconic time: a little Wonder Woman in the vortex of this movement. And what Wonder Woman, who was created in the '40s, what does she symbolize? Justice and equality and speaking the truth. So to be a part of that enhancement, as Wonder Woman's general, it's so great."

As the title suggests, the sequel will take place a few decades after the first film with a more settled Diana in the real world and away from the comforts and protection of Themyscira. Given this, a flashback scene with Antiope and Hippolyta is more intriguing. Perhaps the threat that Diana is set to face in the '80s has links to the long Amazonian history. Both Wonder Woman's and Justice League's villains were entwined with a past occurrence, doing the same thing in Wonder Woman 1984 is certainly possible.

Another interesting tidbit from the report suggests that Wonder Woman 1984 may have already wrapped up filming. Principal photography for the movie began back in June and have gone smoothly over the last few months with occasional set photos making their way online. No indication from anyone involved in the movie that they've finished shooting, the last update was about the release date change from November 2019 to June 2020. Should this be the case, Jenkins will have more than enough time during post-production to finish editing and polish VFX work.
